As a proud member of the second cohort of the Ambition Program, I am thrilled to share my initial impressions, experiences, and hopes for the future. Our Leader, Helen, promised a concise and sweet tagline of “Bringing business ideas from concept to pitch” over a 12-week interactive program. Little did we know the wealth of expertise we would acquire through the workshops and exposure to high-calibre entrepreneurs and startup experts via the weekly guest speakers. In reality, and I speak for the entire cohort, we have received the best crash course in becoming highly skilled and successful entrepreneurs in the quickest and most efficient time possible. Though, admittedly, not as short a tagline!
Our cohort comes from diverse backgrounds, and our business ideas couldn’t be more different. However, we are united by a common goal: to bring our business ideas and dreams to a global market. Of course, there’s also an unbreakable link to the most beautiful county in Ireland! Our expectations for the Ambition program were centered around gaining clarity on our product and target market, developing a roadmap for progress, building a convincing business case for investors, gaining confidence and skills to access global markets, taking calculated risks for anticipated profits, learning from field experts, and developing a 3-5 year plan. Overall, our aim was the ambitious development of our businesses.
The experience on Ambition has been nothing short of phenomenal. Our schedule has been jam-packed with workshops, guest speakers, and masterclasses on practical topics such as problem framing, customer discovery, and market sizing, as well as crucial soft skills such as communication, leadership, and networking. We have learned so much, including gaining clear insight into the validity of our business propositions through problem framing, achieving clarity on our target markets through in-depth customer discovery and validation, identifying alternative products and market needs, adopting new ways of working and thinking, building a close-knit network of fellow entrepreneurs for ongoing support and collaboration, expanding our network of entrepreneurial experts, and most importantly, having a clear path for the future.
There have been countless highlights, and it’s hard to believe how much we’ve accomplished in such a short time. One standout moment was hearing from Ailbhe Keane of Izzy’s Wheels and realizing that ordinary people can achieve incredible success with the right tools and support. Equally important was the candid talk by Sandra Healy of Inclusio, who shared the difficulties, pressures, and risks involved in launching and scaling a business, even when it’s going well! Some of our other highlights included being inspired and motivated by speakers who provided practical and invaluable advice, the eye-opening Mom Test that forever changed how we ask business-related questions, building meaningful relationships within our cohort and experiencing the power of community, receiving ongoing support from mentors and fellow participants outside the formal weekly sessions, and the invaluable one-to-one Mentor Sessions with Helen and Aisling.
I want to advise future participants: if you’re considering launching a business, apply to Ambition now! And for those about to embark on this journey, here are some tips from our cohort: dedicate as much time as possible to the process, as the return on investment will be enormous; ask lots of questions, run ideas by others, and complete the coursework as you go; be yourself and don’t be afraid to express your dreams, as you will receive incredible support and build a strong network; be prepared for the change in pace in the final weeks of the program and arrange for additional help with work/life commitments in the last two weeks; and most importantly, take it all in, as there is so much to learn!
I want to express my gratitude to Helen and Aisling on behalf of our cohort. Their brilliant ideas and unwavering support have been instrumental in helping us surpass our expectations and take our businesses to new heights. We are truly grateful for their guidance and mentorship.
I also want to thank LEO Donegal for making this program possible and their ongoing support, both now and in the future. Their commitment to our success has been invaluable.
To my fellow entrepreneurs, this has been an incredibly supportive and collaborative experience, especially when physical networking and support have been limited. I have learned so much from each and every one of you. Sharing our plans and challenges in such a nurturing environment has been a pleasure. Here’s to our continued success, and I eagerly anticipate more meetings and the possibility of in-person interactions soon!
